Label Design Questions

  • What size are your labels?

Our standard size is 4”h x 3 ¾”w however we can create customized labels. Labels should be sufficiently sized to accommodate large ingredient listings, allergen alerts, etc.  Additionally, the FDA requires specific font sizes and space allowances.

  • Where can I see samples of the Mix and Match options?

The homepage of our website shows the colors and fonts available. Click on each label to see more detail.

  • What is the “Eff. Date” at the bottom of the label?

This is the date the label was printed. If you have old labels, there’s a good chance that information has been updated and you should order new labels. Changes can originate from the supplier, the FDA or the USDA.

  • Can I design my own labels? And if so, what file format do you need?

Yes.  Although we normally co-create custom labels with our customers, we can import backgrounds that your design team creates. Although Trade Labels is not an enforcement agency, we encourage you to have FDA compliant labels in order to avoid possible fines. If designing your own labels, we suggest that you use the samples on our website as a guide to the space requirements for each component. Please note: Product names must have two lines, the ingredient space must be 3.75” sq. in., the Nutri Fact box must have a solid background and be properly formatted. If you have specific colors in mind, please provide Pantone numbers.

Trade Labels can work with PDF, jpg or eps files. Please be sure it is at least 300 dpi to provide clean printing.

  • Do you have PLU/Bin numbers I can use?

No. Although produce has a standardized national PLU List, bulk foods do not.  Trade Labels does not assign PLU/Bin numbers; when you order, you must provide us with the numbers you’d like to us to print on the labels.

Ingredient, Nutrition Fact & Regulation Questions

  • Can I have product information read, emailed or faxed to me for free?

No, you need to contact the supplier of the food if you want free information. Trade Labels only provides information via printed label orders.

  • Does Trade Labels do nutritional analyses?

No. We are not a laboratory; Trade Labels maintains a database of over 12,000 products that we are constantly collecting and updating from vendors nationwide.

  • Do all of my labels need to list the Country of Origin?

Currently COOL is required on: raw macadamias, raw peanuts, raw pecans and dates. If the item is processed, the country of origin is not required.

  • Can you guarantee that the label matches the product we’re receiving?

Trade Labels’ mission is to have accurate information on every label we produce.  We cannot however, determine how long it will take for reformulated products to cycle through distribution channels, nor can we guarantee that all suppliers provide correct and current information.  It is important that you compare the label you display with the product you’re selling. Trade Labels bears no responsibility for assuring that the label matches the product in your bins.  If you see a discrepancy, please call us at (888) 285-5522 and we’ll be happy to explore the issue.
